Leslie has had a unique career as an architect. She has never built a single building, (except her dream house), but she has built successful businesses, Non-profit organizations and complex urban programs. She is an author, speaker, entrepreneur, designer, and mother.
As founding director of Philadelphia’s Foundation for Architecture, she created an influential forum for the city’s leaders, representing government, real estate, urban design, economic development and cultural institutions. In only four years the Foundation’s annual budget increased from $2,500 to $2.5 million and the staff grew from one halftime person to 18, a membership of over 1200, programs in 70 schools, and 70 highly trained city guides. Direction Philadelphia, a region-wide directional and attraction sign program, supported and maintained by the private sector, now in its 30th year was the result of her vision, persistence, and leadership; this has been a model for other cities here and abroad.
Later, as CEO of the Society for Environmental Graphic Design, she resurrected a respected but bankrupt international membership organization of designers. Seeing the strength in dissolving traditional boundaries, she brought together exhibit designers, architects, landscape architects, graphic designers, and industrial designers with fabricators and manufacturers. To showcase examples of excellence in design, she created and edited 25 issues of an award-winning quarterly magazine featuring branding, identity, exhibits, and complex sign programs in health care, airports, cities, universities, and cultural institutions. She has received 3 National Endowment for the Arts Design Awards, and their highest award, the midcareer USA fellow. For the USA fellowship, she published The Power to Make Places, based on interviews with business leaders in cities across the country. She is the author of Luck Is Not a Plan for Your Future: Design Your Tomorrow Today!
